ABOUT BANDUNG CITY
CITY OF FLOWER - PARIS VAN JAVA
Bandung is the capital of West Java and Indonesia's third largest city. In colonial times, it is known as the "Paris of Java" because of its European ambience and sophistication. Bandung shared with Miami a fine legacy of Tropical Deco architecture dating from the 1920s. Bandung is also called city of flowers (kota kembang) and situated on a plateau in the beautiful Parahyangan mountains.
Bandung hosted the Asia Africa conference in 1955. Now, Bandung is a center of higher education (for example ITB, UNPAD, UNPAR, and other universities - see Science and Technology page), commerce, aircraft Industry, and shopping (particularly for shoes, textiles, clothing, and denims - there's even a "jeans street" in which you'll find blocks of jeans stores).
How to get there
If you are using the train
The best way to get Bandung from the other cities in Java is by train. State operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia offers frequent services between Jakarta and Bandung. Even the fastest services take almost three hours, making this a slower option than the shuttle buses, but the scenery between Jakarta and Bandung is beautiful. The railroad passes mountains and padi terraces. Don't miss this view when traveling by train.
Use the AC (air-conditioned) coach if you cannot cope with the tropical heat. The executive class is recommended, especially from Jakarta the Argo Gede, Harina from Semarang, and Argo Wilis from Surabaya. When you plan to get Bandung from Yogyakarta, you can get the same train Argo Wilis. Most hotels in Bandung provide free transportation from train station to the hotel.
