isn’t merely a restaurant and should never be considered someplace to simply ‘have a meal’. Rather, stepping into Kampung Daun is to slide into another world, a throwback craftsman village full of stone walkways, clay pot torches, flaming cauldrons, minstrels and traditional-clad waiters rushing between the 37 saung tucked immaculately into a deep jungle valley and leaving even the most jaded diner breathless. After dinner, don’t forget to take a walk around to admire the impressive natural cliff face and small stone bridges spanning the rushing rapids, witness the making of traditional candies, noodles and desserts, visit the arts gallery and listen to the music. There are so many local dishes to try and even the elaborately dressed Nasi Goreng presented in on a platter of carved coconut shell bowls and saucers is unrecognizable from its warung-produced cousin. Other specialties include the excellent Oxtail Soup, Mie Tek-tek, and Kampung Daun Beef Ribs with buttered rice. For a sweet drink, try the Dwi Warna, which uses fresh strawberries, sirsak fruit and ice cream to recreate the red and white of the Indonesian flag. Featuring a different region each month, Kampung Daun features special dishes, staff in regional costumes and crafts as well as Saturday night dance performances beginning at 7:30. The price for two should run around Rp. 130 – 160.000.
